Description

A smart and very interesting antique Georgian period mahogany writing / side table. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1790-1810 period.

It is of very fine quality, the rectangular mahogany top has an inset leather writing surface, it stands on beautifully tapered legs terminating in brass casters. There is a single drawer with brass handles on one side, with a dummy drawer on reverse; this looks identical on both sides. It is a useful size to be used as a small desk or as an occasional side table.

We have had this re-polished, the condition is very good for its age. There is plenty of character and various signs of old wear remaining beneath the polish, commensurate for age. The leather top is very old and may even be original, it shows plenty of patina and charm, it has been revived by our leather restorer.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The Georgian style spans the reigns of the four King Georges from 1714 to 1830, characterised by classical proportions, symmetry, and the transition from walnut to mahogany as the primary timber.

Cabinet makers typically used solid mahogany and veneers, often incorporating hand-cut dovetail joints, oak secondary timbers, and brass hardware such as castors and handles.

Authenticity is determined by hand-tooled joinery, timber shrinkage matching the age, original oxidisation, and tool marks consistent with eighteenth-century hand woodworking.

A period table adds warmth and historical contrast when paired with minimalist modern seating, neutral walls, and contemporary abstract art.

Maintain stable humidity levels, avoid direct sunlight to prevent fading, and clean periodically with a soft cloth and traditional beeswax polish.
