A netsuke is a small carved toggle traditionally used in Japan from the 17th to the 19th century to secure small pouches or containers worn suspended from the traditional kimono sash.

Netsuke were commonly carved from organic materials such as elephant ivory, marine ivory, boar tusk, stag antler, boxwood, and various resins.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit genuine age-related patination, finely detailed hand-carved execution, correct material grain patterns, and occasionally artist signatures or school inscriptions.

An antique netsuke makes a sophisticated display object when placed within a glass cabinet, on a desk, or atop a specialised stand to highlight its fine sculptural details.

Preservation requires stable environmental conditions away from direct sunlight and extreme fluctuations in humidity to prevent drying, cracking, or warping of the organic material.
