FAQs

Blue and white transferware developed in England during the late 18th century as an affordable alternative to imported Chinese porcelain. Tea caddies were specifically manufactured to store loose tea leaves securely while protecting them from moisture and light.

These pieces are typically crafted from earthenware or ironstone, featuring printed transfer designs applied under the glaze. The pottery is then kiln-fired at high temperatures to achieve a durable, glossy finish with distinctive blue pigments.

Authentic pieces often exhibit makers marks, crazing in the glaze, and minor imperfections indicative of historical manufacturing processes. The depth of the blue transfer print and the weight of the ceramic also provide clues to age and origin.

These decorative containers can be displayed as a grouped cluster on kitchen shelves, sideboards, or open bookcases to introduce pattern and heritage charm. Their classic palette complements both neutral modern settings and traditional country house aesthetics.

Antique ceramics should be hand-washed gently using lukewarm water and mild soap when necessary, avoiding abrasive scourers or harsh chemicals. Keeping them away from direct, prolonged sunlight helps preserve the integrity of the glaze and prevents fading.
