FAQs

An antique sulphide marble is a solid glass sphere containing a three-dimensional ceramic cameo, typically produced in Germany and Bohemia during the 19th century.

These items are constructed from molten glass encasing a moulded cameo made from a porcelainous clay mixture known as sulphide or pot-metal.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit pontil marks, tiny trapped air bubbles within the glass, and hand-formed sulphide figures with a silvery sheen under magnification.

Displaying the piece on a mantelpiece, inside a glass display cabinet, or on a stack of books allows natural light to highlight the internal sulphide detail.

Preservation involves cleaning gently with a soft microfibre cloth and warm water, avoiding harsh chemicals, and keeping the item away from direct sunlight and extreme temperature changes.
