FAQs

Folding screens have a long history in China, originating during the Han dynasty and evolving through the Ming and Qing dynasties before gaining international popularity during the early 20th-century Art Deco period through export markets.

Authentic pieces are typically constructed from dense Asian hardwoods such as elm, camphor, or rosewood, utilising traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery and intricate hand-carved relief panels hinged together.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the depth and sharpness of the hand-carving, the patina of the wood grain, traditional joinery methods, and the type of metal hinges or pin-and-socket hinges used.

Such pieces function well as sculptural room dividers to zone open-plan spaces, or placed flat against a neutral wall as large-scale decorative art to add texture and historical contrast.

Maintain antique wood by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking, dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth, and occasionally applying microcrystalline wax to nourish the finish.
