Victorian Majolica Garden Seat

19th century
Sold 3 September 2025 · Antique Furniture Direct
This “Victorian Majolica Garden Seat” found a buyer.

It was listed by Antique Furniture Direct. Sold pieces stay on Sellingantiques as a record of what has passed through, and the next one is rarely far away.

Description

A colourful antique Victorian glazed Majolica art pottery garden seat dating from circa 1895. Fabulously eye catching with bright vibrant colours, featuring gold and green floral reserves in leaf borders. In good condition, this super garden seat has a moulded top decorated with brown concentric circles on a gold ground. Similar to Bretby Art Pottery in style (not stamped).

After the repeal of the glass tax in 1845, there was a proliferation of glasshouses in middle class Victorian families. Such structures allowed for the cultivation of exotic plants and extended growing seasons for fruits and vegetables. Garden seats such as this would have provided convenient seating for admiring the surroundings or while tending the plants.

Majolica is a type of earthenware covered in an opaque tin-lead glaze, brightly coloured with metallic oxide pigments, which gained immense popularity during the Victorian era for both ornamental and functional objects.

These items are typically crafted from moulded clay, fired, and then hand-painted with vibrant lead-based glazes before a final high-temperature kiln firing to achieve their characteristic glossy finish.

Authentic pieces often feature crazing in the glaze, factory stamps or registration marks on the underside, and intricate, hand-finished mould details that distinguish them from modern reproductions.

Such pieces function well as accent tables in living spaces, plant stands in conservatories, or as statement decorative objects that introduce texture and historic colour to minimalist interiors.

They should be dusted gently with a soft, dry cloth and kept away from extreme temperature fluctuations, frost, and direct moisture to prevent damage to the porous earthenware body and historic glaze.
