The flintlock blunderbuss features a characteristic flared muzzle designed to scatter lead shot effectively at close range, widely utilised by naval forces and coach guards during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

These firearms typically combine a seasoned hardwood stock, such as walnut or oak, with cast brass or iron barrels and steel lock mechanisms.

Authenticity is assessed by examining maker marks, proof stamps on the barrel, the patina of the metal components, and the correctness of the lock mechanism for the stated era.

Such historic artefacts are often mounted on dedicated wall display brackets or exhibited within secure glass cabinets to highlight their craftsmanship as decorative focal points.

Preservation involves maintaining stable indoor humidity and temperature levels, applying microcrystalline wax to metal parts to prevent oxidation, and treating the wood stock with appropriate conservative oils.
