Description

A magnificent Art Deco burr walnut dining table and chairs by Hille. This suite was made in England, it dates from around the 1920’s.

The quality is exceptional, the table and chairs are beautifully designed and are extremely well made. The table has stunning burr walnut grain patterns and is a great size. By drawing the leaf on only one side, a clever and smooth extension mechanism draws both leaves open simultaneously. This reveals an extension leaf folded away beneath the top which unfolds and extends the dining area to seat all eight chairs. The table stands on a beautifully scrolled base and has some lovely carving on each corner.

The chairs are also incredibly beautiful, with a lovely matching scrolled design and burr walnut veneers on the back rests. They are well sprung, sturdy and comfortable.

We have had all the wood stripped and re-polished to a very high standard, the chairs have all been re-upholstered in a cream cotton fabric. The condition is superb throughout.

This suite is part of a larger dining suite that we have, it all came from a previous owner who’s family bought this from new in the 1920’s. We have the matching sideboard, server and nest of tables available separately, we also have a matching bedroom suite in the same design. All can be seen listed under our other items for sale.

Art Deco emerged in France during the 1910s and flourished internationally during the 1920s and 1930s, characterised by sleek geometric shapes, streamlined forms, and the use of opulent materials such as burr walnut, chrome, and exotic veneers.

Master cabinetmakers typically employed solid secondary timbers overlaid with highly figured exotic veneers like burr walnut, amboyna, or Macassar ebony. Construction often involved sturdy internal hardwood frames with meticulous hand-polished lacquer or French polished finishes.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-accurate construction techniques such as hand-cut dovetail joints, genuine aged veneer patination, and often makers stamps or plaques from renowned firms like Hille. Modern reproductions often lack the depth of grain, natural wear patterns, and weight characteristic of genuine 1930s cabinetry.

Pair the rich wood tones of the furniture with minimalist surroundings, neutral walls, and metallic accents such as brass or nickel lighting to highlight the geometric lines and luxurious grain without overwhelming the space.

Maintain walnut furniture by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer cracking or fading. Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth and occasionally apply a quality microcrystalline wax to nourish the wood and protect the polished finish.
