The George IV style, spanning the 1820s and early 1830s, is characterised by robust classical proportions, heavy use of dense timbers like mahogany, and often incorporates Grecian or Gothic Revival influences.

High-end library and writing tables were predominantly constructed from solid mahogany or mahogany veneers over secondary timbers such as oak or pine, frequently featuring brass castors and turned wooden handles.

Authentic pieces exhibit period construction techniques such as hand-cut dovetail joints in the drawer construction, old secondary wood in the framing, traditional patina, and lack of modern machine-made markings.

Pairing a dark wood antique desk with contemporary minimalist seating or placing it against a subtly textured neutral wall creates a balanced contrast that highlights the rich grain of the timber.

Maintain antique mahogany by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber splitting, and nourish the surface periodically with traditional beeswax rather than modern silicone sprays.
