This Chinese export bowl originates from the late 19th or early 20th century and follows a traditional aesthetic. Made from porcelain, the piece displays a colourful glazed finish featuring hand-painted polychrome enamel court figures, terrace balustrades, floral borders, and gilt accents. The rounded body sits on a small circular foot rim and exhibits rich pink, green, blue, and white tones alongside detailed gold highlighting. The bowl measures 14 cm high, 30 cm wide, and 30 cm deep. Positioned on a sideboard top, this decorative bowl serves as an interior display piece suitable for an English Country house setting. The upper rim and foot rim display intricate floral patterns, while the central frieze presents figures gathered on an architectural terrace. The interior contains further polychrome motifs, completing the comprehensive surface decoration.

FAQs

Famille Rose porcelain, known in Chinese as Fencai, is a type of Chinese ceramic characterised by overglaze enamel decoration featuring an opaque pink colour derived from colloidal gold, introduced during the Qing dynasty.

These bowls were produced using translucent kaolin clay porcelain, fired at high temperatures, and subsequently decorated with overglaze mineral pigments, enamels, and liquid gold accents.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit hand-painted variations in enamel thickness, light surface wear to gilding, characteristic iron spots or minor firing irregularities in the glaze, and distinct historical color palettes.

Position the piece as a focal point on a mahogany sideboard, console table, or inside a lighted display cabinet to contrast traditional craftsmanship against contemporary or classic decor.

Clean gently by hand using lukewarm water and a mild detergent, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners, abrasive pads, or immersion, as these can strip overglaze enamel and gilding.
