In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

FAQs

A Sutherland table is a type of narrow drop-leaf table featuring two hinged flaps and very slender folding legs that support the leaves when raised. Developed during the mid-Victorian era, around the 1850s, they were designed as versatile, space-saving tea or occasional tables that could be folded flat and tucked against a wall when not in use.

These tables are traditionally constructed from a solid secondary timber like pine or mahogany, veneered with highly figured decorative woods such as burr walnut or coromandel. Construction features typically include hand-cut dovetail joints, brass castors on the feet, and intricate turned or carved gateleg supports secured by wooden pivot hinges.

Authentic pieces exhibit period characteristics such as hand-turned spindle components, traditional shellac French polish finishes, and subtle imperfections in the burr veneer grain patterns. Examination of the underside and hinge mechanisms reveals period-appropriate iron or brass fixings rather than modern machine-cut screws.

A folding drop-leaf table works exceptionally well in modern spaces as a flexible console against a wall or pulled out as a compact desk or cocktail table when entertaining. The rich figuring of burr walnut adds organic warmth and textural contrast when paired with minimalist upholstery, neutral palettes, and contemporary lighting.

Preserve antique veneer by dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth and avoiding silicone-based polishes or excessive moisture. Periodic application of pure beeswax helps nourish the wood and maintain the protective patina without damaging the historic finish.
