This Victorian occasional table is a nineteenth-century piece standing on a heavy iron three-footed scrollwork base with a tripod design, foliate detail, and an ornate black finish. Mounted on top is a circular wooden panel in a dark brown tone with a smooth, polished finish and a subtle moulded edge. The base incorporates intricate openwork curves and scrolling feet that provide stable support. Practical in size, measuring 69 cm high, 59 cm wide, and 59 cm deep, the piece functions well as an end-of-a-sofa table or an accent piece in a sunlit conservatory. It provides a convenient surface for a lamp, books, or decorative items, bringing traditional industrial character and utility to everyday living spaces.

Victorian cast iron tables became popular during the nineteenth century following advancements in foundry casting techniques. Their durability and ornamental capabilities led to widespread use in public houses, cafes, conservatories, and outdoor garden spaces.

These tables feature heavy bases poured from molten pig iron into sand moulds. Bases were typically paired with tops made from solid hardwoods, marble, or matching cast iron plates.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces feature substantial physical weight, crisp casting details along scrollwork or foliate motifs, and seam lines from sand-mould manufacturing. Foundries frequently stamped registration marks or numbers on the underside of the iron legs.

Position the table beside an armchair or sofa to hold drinks and books, or place it in a light-filled conservatory alongside natural foliage. The dark structural ironwork offers a grounded contrast against lighter, contemporary upholstery.

Keep the piece in a dry interior environment to prevent iron oxidisation. Dust regularly with a soft cloth and apply a microcrystalline wax to both the metal base and timber top to preserve the finish.
