A cellarette is a lockable container traditionally used in the 18th and early 19th centuries to store and chill wine bottles in the dining room before they were served to guests.

They are typically constructed from dense timbers such as mahogany or oak, frequently featuring brass carrying handles, locking mechanisms, and sometimes lead-lined interiors to hold ice for chilling bottles.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the timber grain, hand-cut dovetail joints, period-appropriate brass hardware, secondary woods used in the interior, and natural signs of age and wear.

Such pieces can be repurposed as versatile side tables, discrete storage boxes in a living room, or functional statement pieces in a contemporary dining space.

Maintain stable room humidity away from direct heat sources and sunlight, and periodically nourish the wood with traditional beeswax to protect the finish.
