Description

Antique Buff Terracotta Pair of Tazza Urns, 19thC without Socle Bases, 44cm diameter.

A superbly stylish pair of 19th century buff, English buff terracotta tazza urn tops, without socle bases which sit well and ideal interior or outdoor planters or table displays, fruit bowls or bottle coolers etc..,

The 44cm diameter urns display a handsome, timeworn patination to authenticate character and age which we date to circa 1860-1890, and feature an acanthus floral decoration to the top edge and gadroon pattern to the base.

The urns stand at 26cm tall with flat bottoms, meaning these sit well upon a surface and allow a versatile use.

Tazza urns draw inspiration from classical antiquity, originating from ancient Greek and Roman shallow-lipped vessels used for drinking, libations, or decorative display in gardens and courtyards.

Nineteenth-century garden ornaments were frequently crafted from unglazed terracotta, cast iron, or reconstituted stone, prized for their durability and ability to weather gracefully over time.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces typically exhibit signs of age such as genuine weathering, moss or lichen growth, handmade irregularities, and the characteristic porous texture of period clay compositions.

These pieces can be positioned as focal points in classical or rustic garden schemes, or repurposed as sculptural interior decor placed upon sturdy surfaces or empty floor spaces.

To preserve porous terracotta outdoors, protect the vessels from severe freeze-thaw cycles by draining them thoroughly during winter months and gently cleaning them with soft brushes rather than harsh chemicals.
