Description

A stunning quality antique French Empire mahogany mirrored back console table, dating from around the 1820-1840’s period.

It is of lovely proportions and is beautifully designed. The mahogany top is cross banded and has those typical French moulded edges. There is a single drawer, and the scroll over legs have a gorgeous, sweeping design with paw feet. The back has the original mirror between the drawer and the base, which is a great feature.

The mahogany has a lovely colour tone and patina, and this is in excellent condition for its age, having just been re-polished.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

The French Empire style flourished during the early nineteenth century under Napoleons rule, drawing heavy aesthetic inspiration from the classical civilisations of ancient Rome, Greece, and Egypt to project imperial power and symmetry.

These pieces were typically constructed using dense hardwoods such as mahogany or imported exotic veneers applied over a secondary timber carcase, frequently incorporating fire-gilded brass mounts and mercury-silvered mirror glass.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-correct joinery, hand-cut dovetails, traditional shellac French polish finishes, and construction techniques consistent with nineteenth-century cabinet-making workshops rather than modern mechanical production.

An antique console table can be grounded in a modern setting by pairing it with minimalist lighting or abstract art, creating a deliberate visual contrast between classical proportions and contemporary decor.

Maintain timber furniture by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer cracking, and clean surfaces using only a soft, dry cloth without harsh chemical polishes.
