FAQs

Marble pedestals and columns have been used since classical antiquity in Greek and Roman architecture to elevate statues, busts, and urns. Their popularity revived during the Renaissance and experienced a major resurgence in the 19th century during the Neoclassical and Victorian periods for interior display.

These items are typically constructed from turned natural stone, such as rouge or variegated marble, often featuring cast or gilt bronze mounts, capitals, and bases. The central shaft may be reinforced internally with a threaded steel rod to secure the heavy top and base components together.

Authentication involves examining the natural wear patterns on the stone, the composition of the internal hardware, and the craftsmanship of the metal mounts. Older pieces often feature hand-finished bronze or brass elements and natural stone variations consistent with historical quarry sources.

Pedestals provide architectural height and vertical interest in contemporary spaces. They are traditionally used to display sculptural objects, large vessels, or floral arrangements, serving as focal points in entryways, living rooms, or empty architectural corners.

Marble should be cleaned regularly with a soft, dry cloth and mild, pH-neutral soap mixed with water when necessary. Avoid acidic cleaners, abrasive pads, and harsh chemicals which can etch the polished stone surface and damage metal mounts.
