Mortars and pestles have been used for millennia in kitchens and apothecaries for grinding herbs, spices, and medical ingredients, with surviving metal examples dating back to the medieval period and evolving through the Georgian and Victorian eras.

These utility items were traditionally cast in bronze or brass using sand-casting or lost-wax techniques, often featuring heavy wall construction to withstand the force of pestle impacts.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit hand-finished surfaces, casting irregularities, tool marks, and natural oxidation patterns consistent with age and extensive historical use.

They can be displayed on open shelving, mantelpieces, or sideboards as sculptural decorative objects that introduce metallic warmth and historical character to a room.

Preservation requires dusting with a dry microfibre cloth and avoiding aggressive chemical polishes that strip away historical patina and oxidisation.
