Fire screen tables originated to protect inhabitants from the intense heat of an open fireplace, while later Victorian and Edwardian iterations often doubled as lightweight occasional or tea tables.

They typically feature a solid wood frame such as mahogany, walnut, or beech, housing a panel worked in wool or silk needlepoint, petit point, or gros point tapestry.

Authenticity is determined by examining the hand-woven needlework stitches, traditional joinery methods on the wooden frame, natural material ageing, and hand-turned wooden components.

It functions effectively as a decorative accent piece beside a fireplace hearth, or repurposed in an empty corner or hallway to introduce tactile textile texture and historical character.

Keep the piece away from direct sunlight to prevent fading of the wool threads, dust the wooden frame regularly with a dry cloth, and avoid excessive moisture.
