Description

A wonderful small early fruitwood mortar with its original pestle and attractive double incised ring decoration ......I love the size of this mortar and the way it has slightly warped over the many years, giving it a very pleasing shape and to have the original fruitwood pestle is a real bonus. The colour from years of careful use in the farmhouse country kitchen is a warm brown colour, you always get with aged fruitwood and it has an excellent patination......in very good condition.

French. C1820-40.

Treen refers to small, functional wooden household items made before the widespread use of plastics and modern manufacturing, often shaped by hand on a lathe.

Hardwoods such as fruitwood, boxwood, lignum vitae, and sycamore were traditionally utilised for their density and resistance to splitting during pounding.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit tool marks, hand-turned lathe rings, shrinkage cracks, and a deep patina developed from decades of handling and use.

Display the item on an open kitchen shelf or a wooden surface to add historical texture and organic warmth to minimalist or rustic schemes.

Clean only with a dry or barely damp cloth, avoiding soaking in water, and occasionally apply food-safe mineral oil or beeswax to prevent the wood from drying out.
