Leather fire buckets date back to the 17th century and were utilised by households and communities for bucket chains before the advent of modern fire engines.

These items were typically constructed from thick, vegetable-tanned bovine hide, stitched or riveted at the seams, waterproofed with pitch or tar, and fitted with iron reinforcing bands and handles.

Authentic pieces exhibit genuine age-related patination, hand-stitched or copper-riveted construction, dried pitch linings, and often hand-painted crests, initials, or parish numbers.

They can be used as floor-standing decorative accents, umbrella stands, or planters in traditional, rustic, or industrial settings.

Preservation involves keeping the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources, and occasionally treating the leather with museum-grade microcrystalline wax to prevent drying and cracking.
