This French provincial side table from 1920 is constructed from wood with a sage green painted finish. The piece has a serpentine edge and stands on four slender cabriole legs, highlighted by worn leaf gilding along the edges and trims. A single central drawer is fitted with a dark metal handle. The surfaces show visible wear and antiquing to the paintwork and gilt accents. Measuring 76 cm high, 81 cm wide, and 53 cm deep, this side table serves functionally as an end of a sofa piece in a living room or as a small accent table in a bedroom or hallway.

FAQs

Louis XV style furniture emerged in eighteenth-century France, characterised by graceful curves, cabriole legs, rococo influences, and pastel painted finishes often highlighted with gilding.

These tables were typically crafted from native hardwoods such as beech, oak, or fruitwood, prepared with a gesso base, hand-painted, and finished with leaf gilding and brass hardware.

Look for hand-carved joinery, authentic paint wear exposing the gesso ground beneath, hand-shaped wooden pins, and asymmetrical carved details characteristic of French craftsmanship.

Position the table as an accent piece beside neutral upholstered seating or use it as a bedside table to introduce historic texture and colour into a contemporary space.

Dust surfaces gently using a dry, soft microfibre cloth, avoid liquid cleaners or polish, and place the item away from direct heat sources to prevent paint paint cracking or lifting.
