Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Refectory tables originated in medieval monasteries, where they were used by monks for communal dining in the refectory. Over subsequent centuries, the form evolved into domestic dining furniture while retaining its characteristic long, narrow proportions.

Authentic refectory tables are traditionally constructed from heavy British oak, joined using mortise and tenon joints secured with wooden pegs. The structure typically features thick plank tops resting on trestle bases connected by a central longitudinal stretcher.

Authenticity is assessed through timber characteristics, tool marks, and construction techniques. Genuine older pieces exhibit period-appropriate joinery, hand-planed surface irregularities, natural timber shrinkage, and accumulated patination consistent with age.

Pairing a heavy wooden table with contemporary seating creates a balanced aesthetic that highlights the historic grain and form. The contrast between ancient timber and modern minimalism grounds the space while providing a functional centrepiece.

Preservation involves maintaining stable indoor humidity levels away from direct heat sources to prevent timber splitting. Regular dusting with a dry, soft cloth and occasional applications of traditional beeswax help maintain the surface finish without stripping the patina.
