FAQs

Gateleg tables gained immense popularity in Britain during the 17th century, particularly in the Stuart and Jacobean periods, as a versatile space-saving solution for homes that required furniture to be folded away or moved easily.

These pieces were predominantly constructed from native British hardwoods, with English oak being the primary material used for both the structural frame and the tabletop due to its density and durability.

Authenticity is determined by examining construction methods, such as hand-cut tenon joints, pegged frames, traditional tool marks, timber shrinkage patterns, and the natural oxidisation and wear accumulated over centuries.

This piece can be integrated into contemporary spaces by pairing it with minimalist seating to create a striking contrast between old and new textures, or used as a functional accent table in an open-plan living area.

Preserve the finish by keeping the timber away from direct heat sources and sunlight, avoiding synthetic polishes, and periodically feeding the dry wood with traditional beeswax.
