  • MotifsShagreen textured leather, Fitted interior compartments, Hinged lid, Tortoiseshell instrument handles

During the 18th century, medical practitioners utilized portable pocket kits containing spring-loaded or manual lancets primarily for bloodletting and minor surgical procedures.

These cases were typically crafted from wood or pasteboard cores covered in textured shagreen or tooled leather, often lined with velvet, silk, or paper, and housing steel and tortoiseshell instruments.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-specific hand-stitching, genuine wear patterns consistent with age, traditional vegetable-tanned leather, and original hand-forged steel or tortoiseshell components.

Displaying curiosities and medical instruments within glass cloches or on open bookshelves adds a layer of historical intrigue and intellectual depth to a study or drawing room.

Keep these items away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity levels to prevent the leather from cracking and the tortoiseshell or delicate linings from warping or degrading.
