This nineteenth-century French refectory table follows a traditional monastery style from Brittany and uses reclaimed oak ship timber. The heavy rectangular top consists of four thick planks finished in a warm brown medium oak colour, supported by two cylindrical pedestal legs made from ten-inch mast wood. Iron rope rings encircle the upright supports, and a central stretcher joins the base above stepped plinth feet. Measuring 75 cm high, 199 cm wide and 76 cm deep, the construction remains very sound and solid without any wobble. This rustic piece provides practical surface space for everyday dining in a farmhouse kitchen or a country-style dining room.

A refectory table is a long, sturdy dining table originally designed for communal meals in monastic dining halls during the Middle Ages, later becoming a staple of European country homes.

These tables were constructed from solid regional hardwoods, predominantly oak, utilizing pegged mortise and tenon joinery, thick plank tops, and heavy trestle or pedestal bases connected by stretchers.

Authentic period examples exhibit signs of hand-planed timber, historic wood shrinkage around joints, natural surface patination, and physical wear on the lower stretchers consistent with historical use.

A large refectory table acts as a grounding centrepiece in open-plan spaces, complementing contemporary architectural elements when paired with modern dining chairs or minimalist lighting fixtures.

Clean surfaces using a soft dry cloth, apply high-quality beeswax periodically to nourish the timber, and protect the wood from extreme temperature fluctuations and direct heat.
