FAQs

Treen refers to small handmade wooden objects for domestic use, highly popular in Britain from the medieval period through the Georgian era. Turned wooden tazzas were utilised for serving fruit or displaying items on dining tables.

Craftsmen typically used native British hardwoods such as elm, sycamore, beech, and boxwood, shaped on foot-powered pole lathes. The turning process created symmetrical circular forms, often enhanced with incised concentric decorative lines.

Authentic pieces exhibit tool marks from lathe work, dry patination accumulated over centuries, shrinkage cracks, and wear consistent with age and domestic handling rather than modern machining.

Antique treen brings warmth and organic texture to modern spaces. It can be styled on open shelving, sideboards, or coffee tables as a sculptural accent piece that contrasts with sleek, contemporary surfaces.

Keep wooden treen out of direct sunlight and away from central heating sources to prevent splitting. Maintain the patina by occasionally applying microcrystalline wax and never submerge the wood in water.
