Imari porcelain is a type of Japanese export porcelain produced in the town of Arita, in the Hizen province of northwestern Kyushu, gaining significant prominence during the Edo period in the late 17th century.

Traditional Imari ceramics are crafted from fine white clay and are typically characterised by a distinctive palette consisting of underglaze cobalt blue, iron red, and accented with gilt detailing overglaze.

Authentic pieces often exhibit hand-painted motifs, slight iron-spotting in the glaze, variations in pigment saturation, and occasionally underglaze blue maker marks on the unglazed foot rim.

An Imari jar can be used as a striking focal point on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or console table, contrasting well against neutral backgrounds to highlight its vibrant palette and intricate patterns.

Antique porcelain should be cleaned gently by hand using lukewarm water and a mild detergent, avoiding harsh abrasives, dishwashers, and direct prolonged exposure to strong sunlight.
