Description

This impressive 1920s brass inkstand is decorated to reflect the international interest and excitement for Egyptology during that period. Egyptian mania was at its height when excavators, led by Howard Carter, discovered Tutankhamun's tomb in the Valley of the Kings in 1922. An episode in our history that still spurs discussion and intrigue. Overall the inkstand is in excellent original condition. The oversized glass ink wells ( 7 cm x 7cm x 6 cm high) are particularly pleasing and have only very minor chips to three corners. These cannot be seen when the ink wells are in situ and when considering their function, age, and fragility, I feel these can be forgiven. There is plenty of room for up to eight pens on the front of this attractive inkstand. A lovely decorative addition to a desk.

Egyptian Revival design gained significant popularity during the 19th century, following archaeological discoveries in Egypt, and experienced another major revival in the 1920s after the excavation of Tutankhamuns tomb, incorporating motifs such as pharaohs, sphinxes, and hieroglyphs into everyday decorative objects.

Antique inkstands were typically constructed using a combination of metals such as brass, bronze, or silver, paired with cut or moulded glass inkwells, and occasionally incorporated stones, marble, or wood bases to provide stability.

Authentic period pieces usually display age-appropriate wear, natural patina on the metal surfaces, hand-finished details, and minor manufacturing imperfections in the glass, whereas modern reproductions often feature uniform finishes and machine-tooled precision without genuine signs of use.

An antique inkstand can serve as a striking focal point on a modern wooden desk, a living room bookshelf, or a mantelpiece, blending historical character with clean, contemporary surroundings.

To preserve brass and glass inkstands, clean the glass gently with mild soapy water and avoid harsh chemical polishes on the metal to maintain the desirable historical patina, dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth.
