FAQs

Victorian bamboo furniture gained immense popularity in Britain during the late 19th century, heavily influenced by imported Japanese and Chinese goods following the opening of trade routes. This aesthetic embraced exoticism and light structural design, making bamboo a fashionable alternative to traditional heavy timbers.

These pieces typically utilised steam-bent natural bamboo or rattan for the structural frames, often combined with lacquered surfaces, paper, silk, or gathered cotton fabrics for the panels, secured with traditional joinery methods.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit period-appropriate joinery such as pinned joints, hand-lacquered finishes, and genuine patination on the bamboo surface. The hardware, such as small brass hinges, often shows age-appropriate wear and oxidisation consistent with late 19th-century manufacturing.

A bamboo screen serves as a textural element in contemporary spaces, functioning to zone open-plan rooms or soften architectural angles. It pairs well with neutral palettes, minimalist furniture, and botanical accents to introduce organic warmth.

Preservation requires keeping the item away from direct sunlight to prevent fabric fading and timber drying. Dust gently with a soft brush and avoid excessive moisture or chemical cleaners on both the bamboo frame and textile panels.
