FAQs

Lidded jars originating from Japan gained prominence in European trade during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, becoming prized display pieces in stately homes and wealthy households.

These pieces are typically crafted from high-fired porcelain or ceramic clay, hand-painted with mineral pigments featuring underglaze cobalt blue, iron red, and overlaid with gold leaf details before a final glaze firing.

Authenticity is determined by examining baseline wear, the chemical composition of the glaze, hand-pencilled brushwork nuances, and underlying ceramic ageing characteristics rather than relying solely on stamped marks.

They function effectively as focal points on entrance consoles, mantelpieces, or built-in bookshelves, contrasting well against minimalist architectural backgrounds.

Dust gently with a dry, soft microfibre cloth and avoid using chemical cleaning agents, abrasive scourers, or immersing the pieces in water to protect fragile overglaze enamels and gilding.
