FAQs

Novelty biscuit tins gained immense popularity in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when manufacturers like Huntley & Palmers began producing elaborately lithographed containers designed to mimic books, trunks, and household objects to boost sales.

These containers are typically constructed from stamped sheet metal, often tinplate, featuring colourful chromolithography applied directly to the surface to create detailed textures, patterns, and imagery.

Authenticity is determined by examining the manufacturing marks, lithography quality, type of metal, and wear patterns consistent with age, such as oxidisation and minor surface abrasion.

They can be displayed on open shelving, mantelpieces, or in cabinets as decorative accents, adding a layer of industrial character and nostalgic charm to contemporary spaces.

Preserve antique tins by keeping them in a dry environment away from direct sunlight to prevent fading of the lithography and rust formation on the metal surface, cleaning only with a dry microfiber cloth.
