Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 17TH CENTURY:
Uneven foot wear on the lower stretchers: centuries of domestic use.
Incised channel line bordering the top leaves: typical late seventeenth-century cabinetwork.
Drawn wooden pegs at the joints: traditional construction before wire nails or screws.
Dark, unpolished boards on the underside: slow oxidisation over three centuries.
Slender baluster and ring turnings: classic late Stuart turning profile.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

The piece has a square top with a moulded edge and two hinged drop leaves, a single frieze drawer with a small ring pull handle, finely turned legs, gates, and box stretchers terminating in turned feet. Visible details include wear on the turned elements, untouched pegs, replaced hinges, and chips around the drawer front. The timber displays a rich patina across all surfaces. FAQs

A gateleg table is a foldaway table that features hinged leaves supported by pivoting legs that swing outward like gates. First introduced in the 16th and 17th centuries, these pieces provided adaptable dining options for space-saving domestic interiors.

During the late 17th century, cabinetmakers primarily crafted gateleg tables from solid walnut or oak, utilizing traditional mortise and tenon joinery and turned legs with connecting stretchers.

Authentic period examples display hand-cut joinery, hand-turned leg details, period drop-handles or iron fittings, and natural wood contraction marks corresponding with age.

Position the table against a wall with one flap lowered as a hall console, or place it fully extended in a dining area surrounded by modern seating to create visual contrast.

Maintain the finish by dusting with a soft dry cloth and applying high-grade beeswax polish once or twice annually, avoiding direct sunlight, radiators, and harsh liquid cleaners.
