FAQs

Chinoiserie represents European interpretations of Chinese and East Asian artistic traditions, which saw a major revival during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods following earlier peaks in the 17th and 18th centuries.

These pieces typically feature solid timber frames finished with multiple layers of applied lacquer, often hand-painted with intricate gilt or coloured motifs depicting floral, avian, or landscape scenes.

Authenticity is determined by examining the wood aging, the crackquelure or natural wear within the lacquer layers, hand-mixed pigments, and traditional joinery appropriate to the early 20th century.

A dark statement piece like this works well as a grounding element in contemporary or eclectic living spaces, contrasted against neutral upholstery or paired with metallic accents.

Maintain lacquer finishes by keeping them out of direct sunlight, avoiding excessive humidity, and dusting gently with a dry microfibre cloth without using harsh chemical cleaners.
