An Early 20th Century Chinoiserie Coffee Table

1900 - 1920
Description

An early 20th century low table in the early 18th century style, the circular top with simple moulded edge with a line of trailing leaf, and decorated with lacquered Chinoiserie style motifs including trees, flowers, pagodas and figures in a garden setting over a gold ground, with a plain frieze with panels of geometric gilt decoration each over one of the four cabriole supports decorated with a foliate motif, terminating with a pad foot. English circa 1910.

Condition: Overall very good, there are some small losses to the lacquered decoration and some areas of touching in to the gold ground and an allover craquelure, all consistent with age, otherwise the table is solid and robust and stands well, and is in good overall condition with a charming appearance.

This early 20th century coffee table follows an early 18th century Chinoiserie style, constructed from wood with a cream painted lacquer finish and gilt decorations. The circular top displays a hand-painted East Asian landscape scene with trees, flowers, pagodas, and figures over a gold ground, bordered by a simple moulded edge with trailing leaf detail. A plain frieze contains panels of geometric gilt diaper pattern above four cabriole legs. Each support features a foliate motif at the knee and terminates in a pad foot. Visible details include an overall craquelure, small losses to the lacquered decoration, and areas of touching in to the gold ground. The table measures 40 cm high, 61 cm wide, and 61 cm deep. Placed in a living room, study, or sitting area today, this low table serves as a functional surface for drinks, books, or decorative objects while adding a decorative focal point to the interior scheme. Its compact proportions allow it to fit comfortably beside a sofa or armchair within traditional or eclectic domestic settings.

Chinoiserie refers to a European decorative style originating in the seventeenth century that imitates Chinese and East Asian artistic traditions, characterised by hand-painted landscapes, figures, floral motifs, and lacquered finishes.

These tables were commonly constructed from hardwoods such as beech, mahogany, or pine, which were built with traditional joinery, coated in multiple layers of lacquer or paint, and decorated with hand-applied gilded or polychrome details.

Authentic pieces from this era exhibit natural surface craquelure, subtle hand-painted variations rather than printed transfers, age-appropriate wear to high-contact edges, and traditional timber joinery on the underside.

A Chinoiserie coffee table serves as a focal point when placed alongside neutral upholstered sofas, minimalist contemporary seating, or layered within traditional English country house decor.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoid placing hot or damp objects directly onto the lacquer, keep away from direct sunlight and radiators, and refrain from using harsh chemical cleansers.
