Decorative columns and pedestals gained immense popularity during the Victorian and Edwardian eras, heavily influenced by neoclassical revivals that sought to bring classical architectural motifs into domestic spaces for displaying sculptures and urns.

These pieces typically combine turned natural onyx or alabaster stone shafts with cast or spun brass mounts and collars, often featuring a stepped square base and top platform secured by a central threaded metal rod running through the core.

Authentic period pieces usually exhibit natural stone variations, hand-tooled brass components showing appropriate patination and age-related wear, and traditional construction methods such as pegged or threaded internal iron rods rather than modern adhesives.

An antique pedestal can be used as a standalone sculptural element in an empty corner or topped with a contemporary glass sculpture or minimal ceramic vessel to create a striking contrast between historical texture and modern design.

Onyx is a softer, acid-sensitive stone, so it should be cleaned only with a soft, dry cloth or a damp cloth with neutral soap, avoiding all acidic cleaners, while brass components can be gently dusted without stripping their natural historic patina.
