Antique dairy bowls are large, turned wooden vessels historically used in 19th-century farm dairies to hold milk while the cream rose to the surface for skimming. Crafted from dense hardwoods like sycamore or maple, these utilitarian vessels were essential for traditional butter and cheese making.

These bowls were typically turned on a bodgers lathe from a single block of unseasoned hardwood, most commonly sycamore, elm, or beech, which resisted splitting and imparted no flavour to dairy. Master turners shaped the timber while green, allowing the wood to warp slightly and cure into a distinctive, characterful form over time.

Authentic pieces exhibit tool marks from lathe turning, bottom centre punch marks, and natural age-related patina including historic shrinkage cracks, surface wear, and mellow oxidisation. The weight, dense grain structure of the sycamore, and absence of modern power-tool indicators confirm period authenticity.

Position the piece as a centrepiece on a dining table or kitchen island, filled simply with seasonal fruit, gourds, or displayed empty to highlight its sculptural form and rich timber grain. It adds organic warmth and texture, contrasting effectively against contemporary stone or minimalist surfaces.

Preserve antique treen by keeping it away from direct sunlight, central heating sources, and extreme humidity fluctuations which cause wood to split. Clean only with a dry or barely damp cloth, and periodically nourish the dry timber with food-safe mineral oil or beeswax to maintain the historic surface.
