This late eighteenth-century George III fire bucket originates from the Georgian period and is constructed from leather, metal, and paint. The cylindrical body features a flared lip, a narrow waisted base, copper studding around the rim and base, and a thick stitched leather handle dating from the later nineteenth century. The dark brown exterior carries hand-painted decoration comprising a royal coat of arms with red and gold details, alongside the inscribed motto HONI SOIT-OUI MAL Y PENSE associated with the British Order of the Garter. Visible condition details include obvious losses to the paintwork and age splits to the leather, while the structure remains sound. The vessel measures 29 cm high, 25.5 cm wide, and 29 cm deep. Placed beside a fireplace hearth in a gentleman's library or study, it serves as a decorative storage container for kindling, rolled maps, or walking sticks.

In the 18th century, prior to organised municipal fire brigades, leather fire buckets were essential fire safety tools kept in private homes, public buildings, and churches. They were kept filled or ready to be filled with water and passed along human chains during emergency fires.

These vessels were crafted from thick hide stitched along a side seam and reinforced with metal studs or copper rivets. A thick leather strap handle was secured to the reinforced top rim to withstand heavy loads of water.

Authentic George III fire buckets exhibit characteristic age craquelure across painted heraldry, hand-stitched leather seams, and copper or iron studding. They often feature hand-painted royal armorial coats of arms, family crests, or parish markings.

An antique leather fire bucket functions well positioned beside a fireplace hearth for holding kindling or fire logs. It can also be utilised as a decorative umbrella stand in an entryway or as an accent piece on a lower bookshelf.

Keep the item away from direct heat sources and areas of high humidity to prevent drying or cracking. Clean the surface gently using a soft, dry lint-free cloth, avoiding liquids or solvent-based leather polishes that could damage the original paint layer.
