Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1920s:
Hand-hammered brass wire inlay across the top: traditional North Indian tarkashi metalwork.
Chisel facets inside the pierced lattice panels: hand-cut fretting rather than machine manufacture.
Aged iron butt hinges connecting the folding panels: early six-leaf base construction.
Darkened wax settled into the carved foliage: years of handling and dusting.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Anglo-Indian side table, dating from 1920, takes the form of a small Hoshiarpur piece with an octagonal top and a folding six-section base. Constructed from warm brown teak, the surface displays intricate floral brass inlay on the centre and along the moulded edge, complemented by carved floral borders. The base incorporates pierced jali lattice panels and hinges visible on the vertical supports. Standing at 39.5 cm high and 37.5 cm wide by 37.5 cm deep, this item functions well at the end of a sofa in a living space. The construction allows the object to separate into two parts for transport.

FAQs

Hoshiarpur, located in Punjab, India, became renowned during the late nineteenth century for producing inlaid woodwork. Craftsmen adapted traditional techniques to create items tailored for both local patronage and the export market during the British colonial period.

These tables are primarily crafted from dense hardwoods such as rosewood, shisham, or teak. The decorative ornamentation features brass wire or sheet metal inlay, often accompanied by hand-carved pierced jali lattice panels.

Authentic pieces feature flush-fitted brass wire hammered by hand into carved grooves, displaying minor variations consistent with manual craftsmanship. The bases typically feature collapsible hinged structures with intricate geometric lattice carving.

An inlaid occasional table serves as a tactile focal point alongside neutral upholstered furniture or within bohemian scheme styles. It functions effectively as an accent table, bedside companion, or plant stand.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft cloth and apply clear beeswax polish to maintain the timber finish. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners that may alter the natural oxidisation of the brass inlay.
