This set of four nineteenth-century Chinese export nesting tables uses dark brown hardwood with floating panel tops. Each table stands on bamboo-form carved legs with a pierced openwork apron below the top surface. The construction shows four graduated sizes that fit neatly beneath one another, displaying traditional joinery and a polished timber finish throughout. The largest table measures 72 cm high, 50 cm wide, and 36 cm deep. These occasional tables suit placement at the end of a sofa or beside an armchair in a sitting room, providing surface space for lamps or drinks. Individual surfaces pull out easily when extra room is required and stack away compactly when floor space is needed.

Traditional Chinese nesting tables originated as functional accent pieces designed to fit beneath one another to save space, often produced during the Qing Dynasty and early 20th century for both domestic use and export markets.

These pieces are typically constructed from dense tropical hardwoods such as rosewood, hongmu, or huali, utilizing precise mortise-and-tenon joinery without the use of metallic fasteners.

Authentic examples feature floating panel tops to allow timber expansion across seasons, hand-carved joinery, intricate openwork aprons, and substantial weight due to the density of the wood.

They function effectively as tiered side tables beside a sofa, separated across a room as individual plant stands, or kept stacked together as a compact focal point.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth, apply high-quality beeswax sparingly twice a year, and keep the timber away from direct heat sources to prevent cracking.
