FAQs

Blue and white chargers from around 1800 reflect the enduring European fascination with tin-glazed earthenware and early transfer-printing techniques, heavily influenced by imported Asian porcelain designs adapted by domestic potteries.

These pieces are typically fashioned from earthenware or soft-paste ceramic, finished with an opaque tin-glaze and hand-painted or transfer-printed cobalt blue motifs before being fired in a kiln.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the crazing of the glaze, the weight and composition of the ceramic body, manual potting imperfections on the reverse, and the chemical composition of the cobalt pigments under magnification.

Such pieces serve as striking decorative elements when mounted on a wall using specialized plate hangers or displayed upright on a sideboard or mantelpiece to add historical texture to a contemporary room.

To preserve the integrity of the glaze and prevent further crazing, items should be kept out of direct sunlight, dusted gently with a soft dry cloth, and never subjected to immersion in water or modern dishwashing.
