FAQs

Louis XV style furniture emerged in France during the mid-18th century, characterised by asymmetrical curves, naturalistic motifs, and an emphasis on grace and comfort rather than strict symmetry.

Traditional folding screens typically feature a solid timber frame such as beech or pine, joined with mortise and tenon techniques, and finished with hand-carved ornamentation, gesso, and gold leaf or paint.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the joinery, the type of hand-applied gesso and gilding, signs of natural ageing in the timber, and the construction of the hinges and panels.

Such pieces function effectively as spatial dividers in open-plan areas, as decorative backdrops behind seating groups, or positioned against a plain wall to introduce texture and historical contrast.

Preservation involves keeping the piece away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity, dusting gently with a soft dry cloth, and avoiding chemical polishes that can damage the delicate gilded surface.
