Chinese Blanc De Chine Censer Circa 1620, 1650

Description

A 17th century Blanc de Chine Porcelain bronze form censer late Ming or early Qing c.1620-1650, from the Dehua kilns in Fujian Province. The bombe form with two lion mask handles. The body of an off-white to pleasing cream colour. The inside let partly unglazed. Size at rim 11.3cm with a height of 7cm. Rim with one polished area and a couple of small chips restored professionally. Price £895.00

Blanc de Chine refers to fine white porcelain produced in the kilns of Dehua in Fujian province, China, beginning during the Ming dynasty. It is distinguished by its creamy ivory-white glaze, which fuses seamlessly with the underlying porcelain body.

These censers were thrown or moulded from local kaolin-rich clay with low iron content, allowing for a clear, dense white body. Applied details, such as moulded mask handles, were attached prior to firing at high temperatures under a transparent feldspathic glaze.

Authentic 17th-century pieces generally exhibit a warm, lard-like or ivory tone rather than a bright cold white, displaying translucent properties when held to light. The glaze typically shows smooth integration with the paste, accompanied by footring wear consistent with age.
