Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Dating from the 1890 period, this French bistro style portmanteau serves as a functional coat rack and wall-mounted storage unit. Formed from brass with a polished gold finish and clear glass, the piece includes scroll brackets, a slatted top hat shelf, an integrated central mirror with an original plate, and lower double hooks. Decorative elements include ornate finials on the corners, turned mounting brackets along the vertical backplate, and looped coat hooks secured beneath the mirror. Measuring 43.2 cm high, 102 cm wide, and 29.2 cm deep, it provides practical storage for outerwear and accessories. Positioned beside the front door, this item organises coats, hats, and everyday items in an entryway or hallway setting. The construction combines a reflective glass surface with metal framework, supporting hanging garments on the lower hooks while storing items on the upper slatted shelf. The exposed mounting hardware and structural framework allow for secure attachment to a wall surface while maintaining an open silhouette.

FAQs

A French brass portmanteau rack is a wall-mounted hallway fixture originating in late 19th and early 20th-century France, designed to store coats, hats, and parcels, often featured in bistro settings and train compartments.

These wall racks were typically constructed from solid cast or tubular brass, featuring slatted upper shelves for luggage and integrated bevelled glass mirror plates.

Authentic pieces exhibit heavy solid brass construction, natural surface patination or oxidisation, cast mounting brackets with decorative scrollwork, and original bevelled mirror glass.

Positioning the rack in a narrow entryway, hallway, or cloakroom provides functional storage while adding warm metallic tones and light reflection to contemporary walls.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth, polish the brass frame sparingly with a specialised metal cleaner if an unoxidised finish is preferred, and clean the glass with ammonia-free mirror cleaner.
