This marquetry wall panel from 1920 depicts Durham Cathedral and nearby buildings rendered in contrasting shades of natural wood veneer with rich warm brown tones, visible grain textures, and a curved wooden hanging frame with a small brass hanging loop at the top. The mid-century modern composition shows architectural details of the cathedral towers alongside trees and a house, constructed using flush wooden veneers within a rectangular format measuring 72 cm high, 46 cm wide, and 4 cm deep. The piece suits display in a gentleman's library, hallway, or narrow wall space as a focal point, bringing traditional British architectural imagery into a modern interior.

FAQs

Marquetry is the craft of applying pieces of wood veneer to a structure to form decorative patterns, scenes, or architectural pictures. Originating in sixteenth-century Italy, it became a prominent decorative art across Europe for wall plaques and furniture embellishment.

Craftsmen use thin slices of natural wood veneers featuring various grain patterns and tones, such as oak, walnut, maple, and teak. Different wood species are selected for their distinct natural colours to create contrast, light, and shadow within the pictorial composition.

Authentic marquetry displays distinct seam lines between individual veneer pieces under close inspection, along with natural variations in wood grain and subtle surface texture. Printed or faux wood imitations lack physical veneer joints, grain shifts, and natural depth of tone.

A decorative wood marquetry panel functions effectively as a focal feature in a hallway, study, or reading nook, adding warmth and tactile interest to modern walls. Combining natural wood tones with contemporary framing or minimalist surroundings creates a balanced aesthetic.

Dust the panel regularly with a dry, soft, lint-free cloth, avoiding liquid cleaners or water which can cause thin veneers to lift. Position the item away from direct sunlight, radiators, and humid areas to prevent warping or fading of the natural wood tones.
