Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Sarcophagus form with hipped lid: classic early 19th-century wine cooler outline.
Moulded plinth on stepped block feet: typical Regency and William IV proportions.
Heavy cast drop handles on the sides: functional hardware for lifting.
Softly worn edges and patinated mahogany: consistent with long use and wax polishing.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This nineteenth-century Regency cellarette takes a sarcophagus form with a tapered wooden body rendered in a warm brown timber finish. A pyramidal hinged lid with a central rectangular top handle closes the piece, while dark metal drop ring handles are mounted to the sides. The furniture rests upon four stepped plinth feet beneath a moulded base, and a small keyhole escutcheon sits centrally on the front elevation. Measuring 49 cm high, 78 cm wide, and 51 cm deep, this practical container suits placement in a living room, dining room, or hallway as an accent piece or storage chest. It functions effectively in an empty corner to store bottles or household items while introducing period character into a modern interior.

FAQs

A cellarette is a portable chest or cabinet designed to store wine bottles and spirits, popular in European dining rooms during the 18th and 19th centuries. The sarcophagus form features tapered sides and a faceted or pyramidal lid, inspired by classical ancient Egyptian and Roman motifs revived during the Neoclassical and Regency periods.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid mahogany or mahogany veneers over oak or pine frame bodies. Internal compartments were often fitted with zinc or lead linings to hold ice for cooling wine, while exterior accents included brass side handles, escutcheons, and hand-carved feet.

Authentic pieces display period-specific craftsmanship such as hand-cut dovetail joinery, original brass hardware with natural oxidisation, and hand-planed interior boards. Traces of historical lead or zinc liners, along with genuine age-related wear to the finish and base feet, help confirm authenticity.

An antique cellarette serves as a distinguished accent piece in a formal dining room, hallway, or living space. Modern homeowners frequently use them as occasional storage, side tables, or drinks cabinets, where the rich wood tones contrast stylishly with contemporary upholstery.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax paste annually to nourish the wood finish. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber movement, joint separation, or fading of the mahogany colour.
