Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The iconography originates from a 15th-century Byzantine icon depicting the Virgin Mary holding the Christ Child while flanked by the Archangels Michael and Gabriel. The image became widely reproduced across Europe during the 19th century following its papal dedication in Rome.

Victorian religious prints were commonly manufactured using chromolithography or high-quality engravings. Frames were typically constructed from softwood coated with gesso and decorated with gilding, featuring oval, rectangular, or arched profiles.

Authentic 19th-century prints display characteristic dot matrices or smooth tonal gradations under magnification, indicative of early lithography. Look for age-appropriate darkening of the paper, original wood panel or card backing, and genuine patina or minor flaking on the gilt frame.

An antique religious print can be displayed as a standalone focal piece on a gallery wall or set within a dark-painted alcove to highlight the gilt frame. Combining sacred iconography with clean-lined modern furniture provides balanced contrast in contemporary spaces.

Keep the print away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent fading and paper warping. Clean the glass and gilt frame using a dry, soft microfibre cloth without liquid glass cleaners, which can seep beneath the glass and damage the paper artwork.
