Staffordshire flatback figures are earthenware ceramic ornaments produced in the pottery districts of Staffordshire, England, during the 19th century, designed specifically to be displayed on mantelpieces with unglazed or minimally decorated backs.

They were typically fashioned from earthenware clay, cast in pottery moulds, and hand-painted with underglaze colours and enamel highlights before being fired in a kiln.

Authentic pieces often exhibit fine crazing in the glaze, hollow construction with a vent hole, hand-painted details with vibrant mineral colours, and minor kiln marks or wear consistent with age.

They make striking focal points on mantelpieces, bookshelves, or console tables, adding historical texture and a pop of traditional colour to eclectic or classic rooms.

Dust gently with a soft, dry brush and avoid using water, chemical cleaners, or abrasive cloths to protect the delicate hand-painted enamel surface from damage.
