decorated at Lawrences studio prior to moving to the USA. Once in the US Birks Rawlins studio

was opened and very good decorative and collectible items came out of the studio.

Pate-sur-pate, translating to paste-on-paste, is a decorative porcelain technique where translucent ceramic slip is applied in successive layers to build up a relief design on a coloured ground prior to glazing and firing.

The process utilises liquid white porcelain clay slip painted onto an unfired coloured porcelain base, which is subsequently glazed, fired, and typically set within a protective wooden frame.

Genuine examples exhibit fine dimensional slip work with varying degrees of translucency in the thinner areas, frequently accompanied by impressed maker marks or artist signatures on the reverse of the plaque.
