Cassolettes originated in France during the eighteenth century, initially functioning as perfume or incense burners. During the Louis XVI and Neoclassical periods, they evolved into highly prized decorative urns often displayed in pairs atop fireplace mantels or sideboards.

Traditional French cassolettes combine carved mineral stone, such as marble or alabaster, with gilt bronze (ormolu) mounts. The metal components were typically crafted using the lost-wax casting method and subsequently hand-chased to create precise decorative details.
