This Black Forest desk accessory from 1890 takes the form of a bear leaning over a hollow log. Hand-carved from linden wood with a dark brown finish, the piece shows detailed fur texture across the bear's body and realistic bark patterns along the log. The bear's head is hinged to lift back, revealing an interior space designed to house a glass inkwell, while the front of the log incorporates a pen rest. Measuring 12 cm high, 19 cm wide, and 9 cm deep, the item fits easily onto a standard desktop surface. Suitable for an office desk in a study or gentleman's library, this desk accessory holds pens and serves as a decorative focal point. The carved wooden construction integrates traditional woodworking techniques with animal motifs typical of nineteenth-century European carving traditions. The piece functions practically to keep writing instruments organised while adding sculptural detail to a workspace.

Originating in the Brienz region of Switzerland during the early nineteenth century, Black Forest woodcarvings became popular souvenirs for travelers on the Grand Tour. Artisans specialized in realistic depictions of native alpine wildlife, particularly bears, creating both decorative sculptures and functional household items.

These pieces were typically carved from local hardwoods such as linden wood, walnut, or pearwood. Functional elements, such as internal ink reservoirs, often contained fitted clear glass or brass liner pots.

Authentic period examples exhibit detailed, hand-carved surface textures imitating animal fur or tree bark, visible chisel tool marks, glass eye inserts, and a natural aged patina across the timber.

A carved inkwell serves as a tactile focal point when placed on an executive office desk, an antique bookcase shelf, or alongside leather-bound books on a study console table.

Dust the detailed carvings regularly using a soft, dry bristle brush. To prevent the timber from drying out or cracking, keep the object away from direct heat sources and occasionally apply a clear, natural beeswax paste.
